Advanced Professional Trainings in Humanitarian Law & Policy: 2009 Calendar

HPCR International is pleased to announce its 2009 calendar of Professional Humanitarian Trainings organized in cooperation with leading academic and institutional partners around the world, notably the Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research at Harvard University.

Now in its eighth year, the Professional Development Program of HPCR International offers mid-career professionals engaged in humanitarian action training opportunities designed to provide a comprehensive and practical understanding of the legal, policy, and security tools available to face the challenges of current conflicts. The Advanced Professional Trainings on Humanitarian Law and Policy are composed of two types of courses:

1) The Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy is designed to provide professionals with advanced legal and policy principles on humanitarian protection and security of access.

2) The Thematic Workshops complement the Core Professional Training by deepening the knowledge and experience of professionals on critical issues that are directly linked to practice and contemporary challenges.

These workshops are open to alumni from previous core trainings as well as those with equivalent experience or expertise in IHL and humanitarian security. Combining instruction, working group discussions, case studies and simulations, the 2009 Advanced Professional Trainings include the following events:

1) Core Professional Trainings on Humanitarian Law and Policy:

September 30-October 1, 2009: Thematic Workshop on IHL and Counterterrorism - Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts

October 22-23, 2009: Thematic Workshop on IHL and Internal Conflicts - New York, NY, USA

October 24-25, 2009: Thematic Workshop on IHL and Humanitarian Protection - New York, NY

b/ Thematic Workshops on Humanitarian Security, organized by the Security Management Initiative:

July 13-14, 2009: Thematic Workshops on Cyberspace and Security - Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts

3) Professional CertificateThe Professional Certificate on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Management is open to the participants who complete all requirements, including one Core Professional Training and two Thematic Workshops.

4) Online Course The online course modules present an intensive refresher course on IHL for members of the Forum on Humanitarian Law and Policy, which is available at http://ihlforum.ning.com.

5) Live Seminars Following the successful completion of eight live seminars in 2008, the Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research at Harvard University, in cooperation with HPCR International, will offer a new series of live seminar on key challenges to the implementation of IHL starting March 2009.
