Bishkek (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Kyrgyz prison service have inaugurated a new heating system and a number of other improvements in Colony 27, a prison filled with inmates suffering from tuberculosis.

In November the ICRC began installing a new heating system in the colony, where around 100 inmates are being treated for TB. All of them have contracted the multi-drug-resistant form of the disease which, unless treated effectively, can be a threat to public health in the wider community as people spread the bacillus by repeatedly entering and leaving the prison grounds. By December, the hospital facilities within the colony were equipped with the heating system, and by January the system had been extended to the outpatient medical department and two living areas. The new system, comprising 206 radiators and around 1,500 metres of pipes, runs on either coal or electricity.
"I am very grateful to the ICRC," said Kalysbek Nasbekov, who heads the prison service. "Because of its support, the colony now has a new heating system and a substantial amount of new medical equipment and medicines. I hope our cooperation will continue."
The ICRC has been upgrading sanitary and medical facilities in the prison since 2004 as part of its contribution to the national anti-TB strategy. In 2008 it completed a renovation of the TB hospital and the outpatient medical department – a total of 1,296 square metres – with support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The ICRC is continuing its cooperation with the Kyrgyz justice ministry and national and international organizations working in the field of TB prevention, detection and treatment in prisons and other places of detention.
